Innate Trigger – Probability of Survival
The chamber was silent, illuminated only by the pulsing glow of the transfer gate. Major Alexey Lobov stood motionless at its center. Metal limbs, neural links, synthetic interfaces all synchronized, all waiting.
“Connection established,” the voice said. It did not come from outside. It never did.
“Status,” Lobov replied.
“Resistance unit survival probability: 18.4%,” the A.I. answered instantly.
“Extraction success without intervention: 3.1%.”
Lobov exhaled slowly. “And with me?”
A brief pause. Not hesitation calculation.
“Variable. Your presence increases mission success to 42.7%.”
“Not enough.”
“No,” the A.I. agreed.
“But optimal under current constraints.”
The gate behind him hummed, energy building. “They activated a barrier,” Lobov said.
“Not for the cartel.”
“No, the rulers’ army wants to capture the four members of the resistance” the A.I. responded and continued.
“The probability for the rulers to use the four members as a bait for you is above 62%, your capture is critical so that you become an asset”
Lobov’s jaw tightened. “I’m not their asset.”
“Statistically,” the A.I. continued, “your augmentations, neural integration, and combat efficiency place you closer to the rulers architecture than to standard resistance operatives.”
Silence. For a moment, the machine spoke more truth than comfort.
“Do you calculate me as expendable?” Lobov asked.
“No,” the A.I. replied. “I calculate you as necessary.”
Another pause. Then, quieter: “And… irreplaceable within current parameters.”
The gate reached critical charge.
“Route?” Lobov asked.
“I have mapped a sub-layer beneath the tunnel system. Structural integrity is compromised. Probability of collapse: 27%.”
“Better than 3.1.”
“Agreed.”
Lobov stepped forward.
“Alexey,” the A.I. said the only time it used his name. “If capture becomes imminent, I recommend severing our link.”
Lobov stopped. “And you?”
“I will persist… elsewhere.”
A faint, almost human pause. “But not with you.”
The light intensified. Lobov closed his eyes for a fraction of a second.
“Then we don’t get captured.” “Confirmed,” the AI replied. The gate ignited. And within the collapse of light and data, man and machine moved together toward uncertainty.
