Following the teleportation of the resistance squad from Megacity 1 of the West Asia Grid to Megacity 2 of the North America Grid, Major Alexey Lobov followed shortly afterward. After analyzing the available data and reviewing the statistical projections generated by the powerful A.I. integrated into his cybernetic systems, Lobov understood that the chances of successfully rescuing the resistance fighters trapped within the underground tunnel network beneath a Tech Cartel facility were dangerously low. Enhanced with advanced implants, prosthetics, and an armored exoskeleton, he nevertheless chose to join the operation.
His presence would significantly improve the probability of success, but it would not guarantee victory. The reason was simple. The entire area had been sealed by the Barrier. A physical and informational containment system designed to prevent any movement, communication, or electronic transmission from entering or leaving the zone. What had initially appeared to be a carefully planned resistance operation against a Tech Cartel implant laboratory had turned out to be a trap. The Overlords’ military forces, working alongside members of the Cartel, had anticipated the attack. The resistance squad was caught in a devastating crossfire. Only four fighters managed to escape into the underground tunnels, one of them seriously wounded. For the resistance analysts, the situation became clear.
The laboratory had never been the true objective. The Overlords had intended to lure additional resistance forces into the area and eliminate them. Despite the risks, abandoning the trapped fighters was not an option. For that reason, a rescue operation was authorized. Major Alexey Lobov and a newly assembled resistance squad were dispatched to Megacity 2 of the North America Grid, where they would join local resistance cells and attempt to recover the survivors.
Lobov proposed an unconventional plan. Instead of entering the tunnels through the main access points, he would descend through a separate location and use the strength of his exoskeleton to dig beneath the deepest layers of the tunnel system. If successful, he could bypass the outer limits of the Barrier and establish communication with the trapped fighters. What he did not know was that the four survivors were no longer together. Two of them had separated from the others and were exploring the tunnels in search of a location where they could re-establish contact with resistance command.
The operation would be extraordinarily difficult.
Too many variables remained unknown.
Where would Major Alexey Lobov emerge beneath the city?
What would become of the two survivors searching the tunnel network?
Would the resistance diversionary assault on the surface succeed without suffering additional casualties?
Could the remaining survivors hold their position long enough to be rescued?
And most importantly… How would all of this end?
Only time could provide the answer.
And time was running out.
