Innate Trigger – Veil of Accord
The deserters had sent a message through the old Nomad frequency: “Meeting point: 36°12’17″N / 115°10’46″W.”
Eight travelers crossed the Wastelands, the wind carrying dust and silent doubts. Cipher weighed the risks. Zero said nothing. The rest stared ahead, lost in thought. The rendezvous point was a rusted out watch station, more a trap than a promise. Buck was already there, flanked by a few heavily armed deserters. He offered no plan only possibilities.
“The Mystic Covenant move in sync with the Neural Seraphs. We’ve been tracking them for months. They don’t want power; They want control of consciousness.”
The Nomads fired questions like bullets:
“Why now?”
“Who’s backing you in the Grids?”
“What do you want to become after the victory?”
“What happens to your people and to us?”
Buck answered without defense:
“I’m not asking you to follow. I’m asking you to choose. The right to choose that’s what the Overlords took from me. If we take the Grid, I walk away. I don’t want to lead. Leadership belongs to those who still believe something better can be built. Whether it’s my deserters or you it only matters that they get to choose.”
The meeting ended in silence. The group departed with divided minds. Some saw truth in Buck’s eyes. Others just an old soldier in a new role.
“They suspect nothing.”
Buck stared at the screen. Beside him, a figure wore a Seraph neural link rig. Was it a prisoner or an ally?
