Innate Trigger – Zero Cipher Fernanda and the Nomads
The sun had just begun to set, casting long shadows across the barren landscape as Zero and Cipher approached the Nomads’ camp. The encampment buzzed with activity, as the Nomads prepared for the evening. A few of the Nomads, armed and wary, watched the newcomers closely, but a signal from their leaders put them at ease. Zero and Cipher were led to a large tent where the Nomad leaders awaited. The rest of the tech-freaks stayed in an abandoned building and started to inform a team of tech savy members of the nomads about their skills and what they can do to help the tech team of the Nomads.
Inside, the atmosphere was tense but curious. A fire crackled in the center, casting flickering light on the faces of the gathered leaders. As Zero and Cipher settled in, the eldest of the Nomads, a woman named Fernanda, spoke first. “You both have wandered these lands for some time. We are eager to hear your stories.”
Zero, shifting slightly, began. “I left Megacity 3 two years ago. The overseers’ control, the lack of freedom… it was suffocating. I found a dog, named him ‘Friend,’ and we’ve been surviving ever since. I left Megacity 3 of the North America Grid with the intention of returning to my hometown in Antofagasta, Chile, to see if I could continue my life there or not. The Nomads’ legend reached me, and I hoped to find others who rejected the Grids’ grip.”
Cipher nodded, her gaze steady. “My story is similar. I left Megacity 2, rejecting the trade in illegal implants. I didn’t want to be a part of a system that manipulated and controlled people. So, I found others like me—tech freaks, cyberpunks, scavengers. We’ve been using our skills to survive, always moving, always looking for a place to call home.”
Fernanda listened carefully, her eyes betraying a deep understanding. “We all have stories of escape and survival. When the Grids were implemented, we chose freedom, even if it meant becoming ghosts in the old world. Our aim is to gather, grow, and someday create a place where we can live as we once did—free from the overseers’ eyes.”
The conversation flowed, with Zero and Cipher sharing more about their travels, the dangers they faced, and the fragments of humanity they encountered. The Nomads, too, spoke of their challenges and triumphs. As the night deepened, a sense of camaraderie grew among them. They were different, yet united by a common desire: to reclaim a life unshackled by the oppressive Grids.
Thus, a tentative alliance was formed, with Zero and Cipher finding a new purpose among the Nomads. Together, they would seek out others and perhaps, one day, find a place to rebuild the world they had lost.
